That’s a hypocrite.
In psychology, the concept is called Cognitive Dissonance.
Where our ACTIONS do not match our ATTITUDES. That causes tension in the psyche, and often leads to odd, disrupted, destructive behaviors.
We see examples everywhere:
In the workplace a person might BELIEVE they are the best employee, but their ACTIONS are actually those of the worst employee.
Or someone might have the ATTITUDE that they are really smart, but then BEHAVE in really, really not bright ways.
And then conflict in those people….it’s palpable.
Of course, there’s tons of conflict in our health/fitness lives…right?
What’s so hard about BELIEVING that health and fitness is critical for a fulfilled life, and then ACTING that way?
Oh…apparently, it’s really hard.
75% of Americans SAY they eat healthy. But obviously, the data on buying and eating BEHAVIOR (and obesity rates) show a different story.
So there is INCONGRUITY between what we SAY and what we DO.
And that tension is part of the problem. That tension (of being a hypocrite) sits restless inside the person…driving alot of the anger, self-hate, apathy, and conflict.
Part of the issue is simple knowledge. The food industry makes it very hard for the average person to understand what really is healthy. For example, laypeople and nutritionists agree on many foods (as being healthy), but 70% of people think granola bars are healthy.
Obviously there is marketing trying to convince people that unhealthy food is healthy (you can’t patent broccoli….yet.). And the “belief” part of Cognitive Dissonance in this case is founded on bad data.
So, in the end, with Cognitive Dissonance…there are 3 options:
1-Remain in state of dissonance and let the tension and conflict eat us from the inside out.
2-Change our Attitudes…if we don’t eat healthy, then just say it, believe it…say “I eat crap and am unhealthy, and I personally own and believe that I do and I like to eat shit-food.” See, then there would be congruence between the actions and the attitudes.
3-Change our Actions…if we say we’re healthy, then just f$#king act that way.
Attitude = Action, Action = Attitude…balance, congruence, peace.
